Our mission is to normalise, promote, support and protect breastfeeding in Northamptonshire so that families have the opportunity to fulfil a positive breastfeeding journey.
Welcome To Northamptonshire Breastfeeding Alliance
Working to support, protect, promote and normalise breastfeeding in the county.
Babies are born expecting to breastfeed. It is their instinct - the biological norm for both mother and infant.
In Northamptonshire almost 80% of new mums initiate breastfeeding, but only 44% continue beyond 6-8 weeks. We believe all mothers should have the opportunity to fulfill a positive breastfeeding journey, however long they choose to breastfeed their babies for.
Through our events and activities we aim to normalise, promote, support and protect breastfeeding county-wide. Read more about Northamptonshire Breastfeeding Alliance - our work, mission and how we began here.
As a not for profit charity, we rely on grants and donations from our members to carry out our work. Find out how to become a member or make a donation here.
We also have up-to-date information on local support groups and helplines.

A statement from Northamptonshire Breastfeeding Alliance in response to the current news articles surrounding the drop in breastfeeding rates in the county as discussed at the Health and well being board, which co-chair Esther Stimpson was present at.
Northamptonshire Breastfeeding Alliance has been aware of significant failings in the county’s breastfeeding support services for the past two years and has been proactive in working with partner agencies to try to get key decision makers and Public Health representatives to respond to our concerns.
We have felt strongly that the Northamptonshire County Council budget for breastfeeding is inadequate and this, coupled with changes within Public Health, has let mothers and babies down. We will continue working with those responsible to make suggestions about ways to increase breastfeeding rates in the County and hope to make proposals which take into account both research and the opinion of local parents and families about what works.
Dr Akeem Ali, Northamptonshire's Director of Public Health & Wellbeing, is quoted as being unable to explain the drop in breastfeeding rates. NBA hopes that this represents a turning point within the County. We want to see health bosses urgently appointing a Breastfeeding Lead at Northamptonshire County Council, increased funding and commissioning which makes use of the expertise in the county and plans which include an ongoing commitment to UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative in the Community which is currently stalled.
